Labour Party wins majority

Britain’s Labour Party has officially won enough seats in the UK’s 2024 general election to have a majority in parliament, one of the biggest parliamentary majorities in British history and place a center-left government into Downing Street for the first time in 14 years.

The leader of the Labour Party, Keir Starmer, who is set to become the first Labour prime minister in 14 years, says his government will always put 'country first, party second.'

The UK general election took place on Thursday 4 July 2024.

The Labour Party has won a landslide victory in the UK elections with 333 seats. In contrast, the ruling Conservative Party secured only 71 seats. The Liberal Democratic Party did well. They secured 46 seats seats.

A record 4,515 candidates contested in this year's UK election. On an average, there were 7 candidates in each seat. In 317 seats, 459 candidates contested as independent candidates.

The new Parliament has been called to meet on Tuesday 9 July 2024 when the business will be the election of the Speaker.

The State Opening of Parliament and the King’s speech will follow on Wednesday 17 July 2024.
