The low lying areas and char lands in three upazilas of Bhola district were flooded on Wednesday as the water level of the Meghna River increased more than several feet than normal tide due to the effect of depression.

The flood-hit upazilas are Sadar, Manpura and Daulatkhan and hundreds of inhabitants of the upazilas became marooned.

In Sadar upazila, tidal water overflows over the embankment in Nasir Majhi, Tualtuli, Hajikandi, Sajikandi areas. Water enters the locality through some areas. Consequently, houses of more than hundred families and fish enclosures were inundated. Besides, Ilisha Ferry Ghat, Launch Ghat and Bazar areas were also flooded.

In Daulatkhan upazila, the water was flowing above 10 feet. Local mosque Imam Zahirul Islam said his mosque was flooded by the tidal water. About 3,000 houses went several feet under water, causing immense suffering to the dwellers.

Meanwhile, Daserhaat, Sonarchar and Alamnagar areas in Manpura upazila were flooded. A vast areas under Manpura union were also went under water as the work of the new embankment has not been finished.

Hasanuzzaman, executive engineer of Water Development Board in Bhola, said the Meghna River in Bhola was flowing one meter above the danger level.

Some places of the embankment were damaged due to the pressure of high tidal water. Initiatives have been taken to repair the  damages, he added.
