BD reports 46 more deaths from coronavirus

Bangladesh today confirmed 46 more deaths from the novel coronavirus and 3,489 new cases of infection testing 15,672 samples in the last 24 hours.

With this, the death toll from the deadly virus rose to 2,197 and the number of total infections stood at 172,134.

"Of the deceased, 38 were men and eight women. Of them 12 were from Dhaka, 14 from Chattogram, nine from Khulna, four from Sylhet, three each from Barishal and Rajshahi, and one from Rangpur," Additional Director General of Health Directorate Professor Dr Nasima Sultana made the disclosure during a virtual briefing today.

Thirty-eight of them have died in different hospitals, eight at their respective homes and one was diagnosed with the infection after death.

According to the analysis of Covid-19 victims' age groups as of today, the highest number of patients - 43.97 percent - died till date were aged 60 and above. The age groups of 51-60 and 41-50 come next with respectively 29.09 percent and 14.75 percent. Rest of the age groups stand under eight percent, such as- 31-40 with 7.15 percent, 21-30 with 3.32 percent, 11-20 with 1.14 percent and under ten with 0.59 percent (13).

The gender-wise analysis of victims stated that some 1,741 people who have died from Covid-19 are male and 456 are female, which are 79.24% and 20.76% respectively.

District-wise, out of 2,151 fatalities till date, 50.80 percent are hailed from Dhaka division, 25.99 percent from Chattogram, 5.01 percent from Rajshahi, 4.82 percent from Khulna, 4.32 percent from Sylhet, 3.69 percent from Barishal, 3 percent from Rangpur and 2.37 percent from Mymensingh.

According to the gender-wise analysis of Covid-19 victims, some 1,741 people who have died from Covid-19 are male and 456 are female, which are 79.24% and 20.76% respectively.

"Some 15,883 samples were collected in the last 24 hours and 15,672 were tested in 75 labs across the country. So far 889,152 samples have been tested," she added.

Besides, 2,736 patients have recovered during the time, increasing the tally to 80,838.

Around 46.96 percent of novel coronavirus patients – both symptomatic and asymptomatic – have recovered in Bangladesh so far, while 1.28 percent have died.

The latest day's infection rate was 22.26 percent of the total tests, though the overall rate in the country till date was 19.36 percent.

Currently, 62,998 people are quarantined across the country – including 2,691 newly-quarantined individuals. A total of 321,301 people have completed their quarantine course.

The country is capable of accommodating 31,991 people at 629 institutional quarantine facilities across the country.

Nasima Sultana said, "The authorities placed 792 new individuals suspected of having Covid-19 into isolation, bringing the total to 16,856 after 16,287 left."

As many as 15,294,038 hotline health services were given by 16,454 trained and 4,217 volunteer doctors via three designated numbers, including 190,599 in the last 24-hour till 8am today.

Till date, a total of 746,646 thermal screenings were conducted at different ports, including 1084 at three international airports, 87 at two seaports and 313 at all land ports in the last 24 hours.

Dr Nasima further added that the number of general beds dedicated to Covid-19 treatment in Dhaka city and countrywide are respectively 6,305 and 14,945, while the ICU beds count for 142 in Dhaka metropolitan and 394 in the whole country. There are 11,764 oxygen cylinders, 136 high-flow nasal cannula and 98 oxygen concentrator available across the country.

However, only 4,176 general beds and 194 ICU beds are currently occupied by the patients receiving Covid-19 treatment countrywide.

The virus has killed 546,987 people globally and infected 11,965,162 so far.
