Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan has said that the noise pollution control law will soon be published as a gazette, reinforcing legal measures to combat noise pollution and protect public health.
She said this while speaking at an awareness program on noise pollution control and driver retraining in Dhaka today.
“Efforts are underway to finalize the necessary steps, and the act will be published shortly,” she said on Friday.
The environmental adviser said, "The sound of horns makes it difficult to work in the secretariat. Dhaka is turning into a hell. People are going crazy due to the pain of horns. A restless generation is being created due to noise pollution. All the societies in the capital will be brought under this training in phases. In foreign countries, honking means abusing.
A United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report released in 2022 identified Dhaka as the noisiest city among 61 major urban centres worldwide.
The report said the city's average noise level stood at 119 decibels, twice the acceptable standard.
According to the World Health Organization, exposure to noise above 60 decibels can cause temporary hearing loss, while levels exceeding 100 decibels can damage permanent hearing.
