Dhaka University-affiliated seven government college students have blocked the Science Lab intersection for the second consecutive day, demanding the formation of an independent public university which halted vehicular movement in that area.

Around 11 o'clock today, the students took a procession from Dhaka College and took a stand at the Science Lab intersection. Earlier, they held a protest march at the Dhaka College campus. At that time they sloganed 'Affiliation or freedom, freedom, freedom', 'Education trade, won't accept, won't accept', 'No more slavery, want to be independent'.

The students who participated in the movement say that the government is not accepting the demand to establish an independent university with seven colleges. We want our demand to be accepted as soon as possible. The government has forced us to take to the streets without solving the logical problem.

Earlier, in a press conference held at Dhaka College on September 22, the students highlighted the problems of seven colleges. Then, on September 25, they made the same claim to education advisor Wahid Uddin Mahmud. Students gave memorandum to DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmad Khan and UGC Chairman Prof. Dr. SMA Faiz on September 29. The same memorandum is also given to the principals of the colleges.

During this time, the students also raised 3-point demands. They are-

1. A reform committee should be constituted as soon as possible with a view to making it an autonomous public university with seven colleges.

2. The reform committee will discuss with the teachers-students and stakeholders of the seven colleges within 30 working days and formulate the outline of establishing only one independent university comprising the seven colleges.

3. The reform committee will work in coordination with the Dhaka University administration to keep the current structure functioning. So that regular students do not suffer any kind of complicated environment.
