A Dhaka court has granted a seven-day remand for former inspector general of police AKM Shahidul Hoque and an eight-day remand for Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, both arrested in two separate murder cases.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Akhtaruzzaman issued the bail orders on Wednesday morning after a hearing.
Shahidul’s remand was granted in a case filed over businessman Abdul Wadud's killing in the Nilkhet area, while Mamun's remand was related to the killing of grocery store owner Abu Sayed in Mohammadpur during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Both former police chiefs were arrested in Dhaka’s Uttara late on Tuesday.
On July 19, at around 4pm, during the quota reform movement, grocery store owner Abu Sayed was killed in Mohammadpur when police indiscriminately opened fire on students and civilians.
On August 13, a case was filed in court by an individual named SM Amir Hamza, naming Sheikh Hasina and former road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader, among seven others, as accused.
In a separate incident during the student movement on July 19, businessman Abdul Wadud was shot dead by police in the Nilkhet area.
His brother-in-law, Abdur Rahman, later filed a murder case against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Obaidul Quader and 128 others in this connection.
