Road crashes kill 29 amid Eid return journey

At least 29 people were killed and as many people were injured in road accidents in 12 districts across the country on Saturday when the return journeys of Eid holidaymakers reached the peak.

Following road accidents in Tangail and Sirajganj due to wreckage and protest of people, vehicular movements were disrupted on Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge Highway and Hatikumrul-Bonpara highway causing public suffering.

A pregnant woman, who was killed in a Mymensingh road accident with her husband and six-year-old daughter, gave birth to a child before dying and the newborn survived the ordeal.

With the latest fatalities, at least 307 people were killed and over 1,000 more were injured in some 275 road accidents across the country between July 5 and July 16.

Our correspondent in Tangail reported that seven people were killed and nine more were injured in two separate road accidents in the district.

The first accident occurred on the Dhaka-Tangail-Bangabandhu Bridge Highway at the Dulla Munsur area under Mirzapur upazila on early Saturday.

Four unidentified people were killed and nine others were injured in the accident.

Officer-in-charge of Gorail highway police station Mollah Tutul said that a Dhaka-bound bus hit a parked sand-laden truck from the back, leaving three people dead on the spot dead and 10 injured.

He said that an injured person died at Mirzapur Kumudini Medical College Hospital.

Dhaka-bound traffic movement came to standstill for two hours after the accident, causing huge suffering to people travelling to the capital and other places of the country after the Eid-ul-Azha celebration.

The police removed the damaged vehicles from the highway to help traffic movement resume at about 6:45am, the OC said.

In a separate accident, a mother and her two children were killed when a bus hit them while they were crossing the same highway in the Pakulla area under Mirzapur upazila around 11:30am.

Locals blocked the highway and demonstrated protesting at the incident for around two-and-half hours causing a 16-kilometre tailback on the highway.

The deceased are Parveen Akhtar, 27, her daughter Sadia, 9, and her son Suman, 7, from Mirzapur upazila in the district.

The officer-in-charge of Gorai highway police station, Mollah Tutul said that Sadia died on the spot.

Parveen and Suman died at the 250-bed Tangail General Hospital, confirmed the hospital’s resident medical officer Lutfar Rahman.

Local people demand the construction of a footbridge on the spot after the accident as they blocked the road.

The blockade was withdrawn around 2:00pm.
New Age correspondent in Siranjganj reported that three people died on the spot and three others were injured when a Dhaka-bound RV Travels bus from the opposite lane hit two trucks on the Hatikumrul-Bonpara highway at Khalkula area under Tarash upazila at 1:00pm.

The deceased are Aziz, 46, from Bagha in Rajshahi district, Meraj Uddin, 32, from Ishwardi in Pabna and Raihanur Rahman, 35, from Kaunia in Gazipur district.

Hatikumrul highway police station officer-in-charge Lutfur Rahman said that one critically injured passenger was admitted to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital and two others at a local hospital.

Due to the accident vehicular movement was disrupted at the Khalkula area on the highway for two-and-half hours until 3:30pm.

Our correspondent in Mymensingh reported that a couple and one of their children were killed and a newborn of them survived with injuries when a truck ran over them on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in the Trishal area in the district around 2:30pm.

The deceased are Jahangir Alam, 40, son of Mustafizur Rahman Bablu from the Fakirbari area in Raimoni village under Trishal upazila, Jahangir’s pregnant wife Ratna, 30 and daughter Sanjida, 6.

Quoting witnesses, Trishal police station officer-in-charge Md Main Uddin said that Mymensingh-bound Taj and Mahi enterprise goods truck crushed them under its wheels as they were crossing the road.

Ratna gave birth to her baby before dying on the spot, he said.

The baby was healthy with some injuries on the right hand and was sent to a Mymensingh hospital for treatment, he said.

Main Uddin mentioned that they seized the truck but its driver escaped and a case was under process.

Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported that four people were killed and one was severely injured in a collision between a mini truck and a car on the Bogura-Naogaon highway in the Dargahat area under Kahaloo upazila in Bogura around 8:30am.

The deceased are Tanser Ali, 60, his son Togor Ali, 35, from Dhamoirhat upazila of Naogaon district, Abdur Rahman, 35, and Sumon, 30, from Patnitala upazila of Naogaon district.

Kahaloo police station officer-in-charge Ambar Hossain told the news agency that three people died on the spot and another died on the way to the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.

Our correspondent in Sylhet reported that three people were killed and two more were injured when a Sylhet-bound bus of Mitali Paribahan collided head-on with an auto-rickshaw on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway near Auskandi Toll Plaza at the Nabiganj upazila in Habiganj around 5:00pm.

The deceased are Bakul Begum, 62, wife of Abul Hossain Chowdhury of Betapur village at Auskandi union under Nabiganj upazila in Habiganj, Yahiya Chowdhury alias Javed, 24, son of Kachi Miah Chowdhury of the same Betapur village, and the auto driver Rabbani Miah, 40, of Daulatpur village at the same Auskandi union, police said.

All victims were the passengers of the auto, Nabiganj police station officer-in-charge Dalim Ahmed told Our.

Two critically injured victims were sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital, he said.

He said that they seized the bus but its driver and his assistants managed to flee.

New Age correspondent in Brahmanbaria reported that two people were killed and four more were injured in a head-on collision between a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a car in the Ujanisar area in the district around 10:30am.

The deceased are the auto driver Chan Miah, 50, resident of Majlishpur of Sadar upazila and its passenger Billal Miah, 45, of village Kharera of Kasba upazila.

Police constable Hasibul Hossain is among the four injured.

Locals said that the accident left the auto passengers injured and later two of them died at Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital.

Brahmanbaria Sadar police station officer-in-charge Md Emran Hossain confirmed the news.

BSS also reported that two people were killed in two separate road accidents in Gazipur.

Jahangir Alam, a sub-inspector of Pubail Thana said that two auto-rickshaws collided head-on at the Shukundirbagh Bander Tek area around 9:00am leaving Ibrahim, 33, son of Idris Mia, from Monohardi upazila of Narsingdi district dead on the spot.

Besides, a laguna and a truck collided head-on on the Tongi-Narshingdi Road at Pubail College Gate area leaving one unidentified person dead.

Our correspondent in Rajshahi reported that a police constable died on the spot and his wife was injured as a bus hit and ran over a motorcycle on the Rajshahi-Naogaon highway at Sakoa area under Mohonpur upazila in Rajshahi on Saturday morning.

Deceased Jewel Rana, 31, is the son of Muhibur Rahman of Kurkuti village under Manda upazila in Naogoan. He was posted in Bogura’s Adamdighi police station.

Quoting witnesses, Touhidul Islam, officer-in-charge of the Mohonpur police station, told Our that the deceased policeman along with her wife was heading towards Rajshahi from Naogoan by motorcycle.

His wife was admitted to Mohonpur Upazila Health Complex, from where she was referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital as her condition was critical.

Touhidul said that they seized the bus but the driver and his associates managed to flee.

A youth was killed and another was injured after a bus hit a rickshaw near Pantha Kunja Park in Dhaka around 4:00am.

The deceased is Ibrahim Biswas, 24, from Ujirpur of Barishal and manager of a restaurant in Old Dhaka.

Ibrahim was on the rickshaw heading towards Karwan Bazar to buy vegetables for the restaurant when an unidentified bus hit it from behind near Sogangaron Hotel at Karwan Bazar, said police.

As Ibrahim fell on the road the bus ran over him. The rickshaw puller sustained injuries.

Ibrahim was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, said sub-inspector Shahabuddin of Shahbagh police station.

New Age correspondent in Cumilla reported that one died on the spot and one was injured when a bus hit a motorcycle from behind on the Cumilla-Noakhali Regional Highway at Harishchar area in Sadar Dakshin Upazila around 4:30am.

The deceased is Monir Hossain, son of Tota Mia of Dhanyadaul village of Brahmanpara upazila of the district. He was a flute player and member of the Cultural Foundation of Cumilla.

The organisation’s general secretary Kishore Kanti Dey said that Monir and Borhan Uddin were returning to Cumilla from Laksam by motorcycle when they met the accident.

United News of Bangladesh reported that a farmer was killed and six others were injured when a truck hit the victims after its driver lost control over the steering at Barbazar Firozpur in Jhenaidah’s Kaliganj upazila around 7:00am.

The deceased is Lokman Hossain, 80, son of late Rustam Biswas of Khosalpur area of Kaliganj upazila, said Mesbah Uddin, officer-in-charge of the Kaliganj highway police station.
