‘I was not abducted and am happy with my new husband, who is a barber by profession,’ says the ‘rescued’ gynecologist

Dr Ayesha Siddika Mitu, a gynecologist, was living a happy and peaceful life with her new husband and son in Dhaka.

The 34-year-old had divorced her first husband after falling in love with Rafiqul Islam alias Bappi, a barber by profession, and started a new family 21 months ago.

Mitu, with the hopes and dreams to start fresh, fled with Bappi from Rangpur to Mohammadpur early last year after realizing that this marriage would never get her family’s approval.

However, on Monday, the happily married couple was detained in a drive by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Rangpur following a case filed over the incident.

Mitu was “rescued” and Bappi was arrested by the CID officials.

“In March, 2019, Abdul Gaffar, Mitu’s father, filed a case with the Rangpur Kotwali police station accusing Bappi of abducting his daughter Mitu, who is a gynecologist.

“The investigating officer (IO) of the case rescued the abducted gynecologist and arrested the accused, Bappi, on December 21,” CID’s Superintendent of Police (SP) Milu Mia Biswas disclosed this at a press briefing on December 22.

He said: “Mitu had divorced her previous husband, with whom she had a child, after falling in love with Bappi. Her first child is with her first husband. They told us that they had been married for a long time.”

“However, as an abduction case was filed by Mitu’s father, the two will be sent to the court for further legal proceedings,” the SP added.

“We have learnt that Mitu and Bappi had been in a relationship for eight to nine years. They even had fled once before. Although Mitu was brought back home, they again fled last year. Bappi used to work for Mitu’s father as a manager,” he further said.

He added: “Mitu has a son with Bappi. For the past 21 months, the gynecologist had been bearing all the expenses for her new family by practicing at a chamber in Mohammadpur.”

Dr Mitu, during CID’s press conference, told reporters that she had not been abducted as she willingly fled with Bappi to start a new family.

“We have been married for 21 months. We have a son together. We are happy. My father had filed a false case against us.”
