Train-bus collision kills 12 in Joypurhat

At least 12 people have been killed and five others injured in a collision between a train and a bus in Purana Poil area of the Joypurhat district town on Saturday morning.

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Joypurhat Deputy Commissioner Md. Shariful Islam confirmed the matter to Banglanews.

Besides, Sirajul Islam, station officer of Joypurhat Fire Service, told the news portal that a bus named 'VIP Poribohon' coming from Hili, Dinajpur collided with the train Uttara Express, which started from Parbatipur upazila, Dinajpur, at 6:55am. The train dragged the bus on the tracks for about half a kilometre, leaving 12 passengers dead on the spot and five others injured.

The injured were undergoing treatment at the hospital in critical condition.

On information, fire service team rushed to the spot and carried out rescue operation, said the official.

Train communications with the northern regions have been suspended due to the accident, he added.
