N’ganj mosque blast: Managing committee president arrested

The president of the managing committee of Narayanganj's Baitus Salat Jame Mosque, where a blast claimed 34 lives last month, has been arrested on Friday night in connection with a case over the incident.

The arrestee Abdul Gafur, 65, a former Union Parishad member, was detained from in front of his house in Talla railway area around 10 pm on Friday by a team of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

CID Narayanganj Office Special Superintendent of Police, Md Nasir Uddin Ahmed, told Prothom Alo, "Abdul Gafur has been arrested in a case filed by the police in connection with the blast inside the mosque. The investigation has found clear evidence of his negligence and carelessness that led to the explosion."

"A total of 12 people from Titas Gas, DPDC and even local electrician, have been arrested so far in the case. If information, evidence and involvement are found against anyone in the investigation, they will be brought under the trial. It will be possible to file a chargesheet in the case by next one week," he added.

On September 4, a grisly explosion took place around 8.30pm at the Baitus Salah Jame Mosque located in West Tolla area in Narayanganj's Fatullah. More than 50 worshipers sustained crucial burn injuries, while six air conditioners exploded inside the mosque triggered by a gas leak. 34 of the injured people succumbed at hospital later.

Fatullah Model Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Humayun Kabir filed a case against Titas Gas, DPDC and the mosque committee bringing allegation of negligence. The case was later transferred to CID.
