A Juba League leader allegedly beaten up an on-duty traffic sergeant for requesting to wear a face mask.
The youth also threatened to kill the police sergeant with a pistol on Sunday, according to a case statement filed with the Pallabi Police Station.
Police and local people said that accused Jewel Rana is the general secretary of Dhaka's Pallabi Juba League unit.
Tapas Kundo, sub-inspector of Pallabi Police Station and also the investigation officer, confirmed the matter.
He said that sergeant Md Al Farhad Mollah filed the attempt to murder case against Rana and unidentified 30-40 people on Monday.
Citing the case, the officer said that sergeant Farhad was on duty at Kalshi Main Road in Pallabi around 11:30 am on Sunday when a minibus faced an accident, creating a traffic jam.
At that time a man named Rana started abusing the driver.
When he was told to go to the other side of the road Rana began insulting the sergeant without paying any heed to his words.
He was then asked to speak after wearing the mask. Then Rana started slapping the sergeant and at one point he pulled a pistol out of his pocket.
Later, pedestrians and police constables parted took the sergeant and Jewel Rana apart. At this time the sergeant sought help from Pallabi police station through radio, said SI Tapas.
He said four to five minutes after the incident Jewel Rana along with his other 30 to 40 associates came in front of Kalshi police box and again attacked the sergeant.
The sergeant also complained that the attackers snatched his body-on camera and tore off his uniform. They fled when Pallabi police came to the spot. Colleagues rescued the sergeant and took him to Islamia Hospital.
