Onion prices have been increasing in the market for two weeks due to a shortage in the supply of local varieties, according to traders. The prices of chicken, eggs and potatoes are also on the rise. However, the price of green chilli has fallen below Tk 200. The prices of other vegetables also decreased.

Data from the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) showed that local varieties of onions were selling for Tk 115 to Tk 135 per kg today compared to Tk 110 to Tk 120 a week ago.

Meanwhile, imported onions were fetching Tk 80 to Tk 110 per kg today, down by 5 per cent from Tk 90 to Tk 105 a week prior, according to TCB data.

The sellers said that the stocks of onions were low at the end of the season. As a result, the supply of local onions in the market has decreased. Again due to heavy rain sowing of new onions is delayed. On the other hand, the price of imported onion is also slightly higher. Due to these reasons, onion prices are high in the market. Over the past two weeks, the price of onion has increased by Tk 10-20 per kg.

Today, after visiting Sheorapara, kochukhet Market and Mirpur in the capital, it was found that local onion is being sold at Tk 125-140 and imported onion at Tk 100-120 per kg. But two weeks ago, local onion was 115-125 and imported onion was 90-100 taka. 
According to the government agency Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), local onion prices have increased by a maximum of 17 per cent and imported onions by 10 per cent in the last month.

Chicken sees a price hike

Broilers and golden chickens are being sold at high prices in the market for a month. Among these, the price of golden chicken has increased more. It has been seen from the market that broiler chicken is now selling at Tk 190-210 per kg. It was available at 20-30 taka a month and a half ago. On the other hand, golden chickens were sold at Tk 300-320 yesterday, which was Tk 250-260 a month and a half ago.

Meanwhile, due to the increase in the price of eggs, the government has recently taken the initiative to increase the supply of the product in the market by reducing the duty. This reduced the price to 145-150 taka per dozen. However, its price has increased slightly in the last few days. A dozen eggs were sold at Tk 155-160 in different markets in Dhaka yesterday.

Dealers said that the price of coarse and medium rice at the retail level has increased by taka 2-4 per kg in two weeks.

The price of green chillies in the market has decreased by about 100 taka per kg. Yesterday in Dhaka, a kg of chilli was sold at Tk 160-180, which was Tk 250-300 last week.

Prices of most vegetables have fallen as supply increases. For example, a week ago in the retail market of Dhaka, Dhandul, Patol, Radish, Chichinga and Jinga were sold for Tk 80-100 per kg. Yesterday these vegetables were bought for 50-80 taka. Similarly yesterday, brinjal was sold at Tk 80-130, kankarol and barbati at Tk 80-100 and bitter gourd at Tk 70-80 per kg. Within a week, the price of these vegetables has decreased by Tk 20-50 per kg. Each gourd was sold at Tk 40-50, and papaya at Tk 30-40 per kg. However, the prices of different types of spinach are still high in the market.
