The Patent office recognizes Tangail Sari as GI product Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) under the Industries Ministry has recognized the "Tangail Sari" as a Geographical Indication (GI) product of the country.

Senior Secretary of the Industries Ministry Zakia Sultana on Wednesday disclosed it and said that a gazette notification will be issued on Thursday.

The DPDT recognizes and certifies GI products under the Ministry of Industry in accordance with the norms of the International Property Rights Organization (WIPO).

In 2013, the Geographical Indication Products (Registration and Protection) Act was enacted. In 2015, the DPDT called for the registration of GI products after the enactment of the law.

The Tangail deputy commissioner applied to the Director General of the DPDT to claim the Geographical Indications (GI) status for Tangail sari.

Notably, a controversial claim was made via a Facebook post on the official page of India’s Ministry of Culture, sparking criticism and humour on social media.

The post claims: “The Tangail sari, originating from West Bengal, is a traditional handwoven masterpiece. Renowned for its fine texture, vibrant colors, and intricate Jamdani motifs, it epitomizes the region’s rich cultural heritage. Each Tangail sari is a testament to skilled craftsmanship, seamlessly weaving together tradition and elegance.”

Since then, there has been a wave of outrage and protests throughout the country.

People have been protesting on various social media platforms. A human chain was formed in Tangail in protest.
