RMG workers from several factories have staged multiple protest marches on Abdullahpur-Baipail road since morning demanding a salary hike to a minimum of Tk23,000 in Savar's Ashulia on Monday.

Police fired several rounds of teargas shells to remove the workers from the road. 

Additional police have been deployed in different areas of the road.

According to the agitated workers around 3,000-4,000 employees from different factories gathered on Abdullahpur-Baipail road since 8am. They started their protest march, but the police personnel deployed asked them to leave. 

However, undeterred, they recommenced their protest at 10am, and again at 11am reiterating their demand for an increase in their salaries.

Golam Rabbani, a protesting worker, said they went to the factories in the morning but did not work. They started their protest on the streets but the police removed them.

Arif, another factory worker, said, "I get a salary of Tk9,500. You cannot do anything with that amount of money. Everything is so expensive.”

A senior official of Gazipur Industrial Police-1, requesting anonymity, said that an estimated 30 teams of industrial police have been working in the area since morning. 

He added that they are trying to remove the agitating workers from the road, but they are not listening. 

Ashulia police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) SM Kamruzzaman said: "We are trying to disperse the workers from the road to maintain law and order situation. We are working to ensure that traffic on the road is normal.”
