Commuters in Sylhet were seen scrambling for public transport on Tuesday as transport workers enforced an indefinite strike since the morning.

A large crowd was seen waiting for transportation at different intersections. Students as well as office-goers were in distress as buses, minibusses, microbuses, and CNG autorickshaws stopped plying in the city.

Due to the strike, no long-distance buses left Sylhet, forcing many passengers to return home.

Nahi Munkar Nahin, a class four student, said that she was struggling to go to her school due to the lack of transport.

Sylhet District Road Transport Workers Coordinating Council President and Sylhet District Bus Minibus Coach Microbus Workers Union President Haji Moinul Islam said they announced their decision to enforce the strike on Sunday.

He said the District Owners Association also declared solidarity with them.

The transport leaders said that they submitted a memorandum to the home minister on Monday with five-point demands.

The five-point demand of the transport workers include the removal of the Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) commissioner and deputy commissioner (traffic), stop excessive fines including harassment by traffic police, withdrawal of Nazmul Alam Romen, the representative of the Labour Court in Sylhet, reopening of stone quarries as per High Court directives, speedy rehabilitation of dilapidated roads and stop sale of new CNG-powered auto-rickshaws and registration of the vehicles sold.
