B’baria trawler capsize death toll hits 22, five arrested

The death toll from the Friday’s trawler capsize in Laiskar Beel area in Brahmanbaria hit 22 as body of another victim was recovered on Saturday and the police had arrested five people so far in this connection.

A murder case was also filed in this connection with Bijoynagar police station.

 Brahmanbaria Fire Service and Civil Defence assistant director Taufiqul Islam confirmed that the latest deceased was a three-year old named Nasra from Pairtola while 19 of the deceased had so far been identified.

The police arrested Solaiman Mia, the owner of the sand-laden trawler that collided with the victim trawler, and Mithu of Champaknagar Ghat in this connection, said Brahmanbaria sadar circle additional superintendent of police Mojammel Hossain Reza.

Earlier on Friday night, the police arrested the sand-laden trawler steersman Jamir Mia, 35, and his assistants Md Khokon, 22, and Md Russell, 18, he said.  

Selim Mia, who lost four of his family members in the trawler capsize, filed a murder case with Bijoynagar police station accusing seven people, said the station officer-in-charge Mirza Mohammad Hasan.

On August 27 afternoon, at least 21 people died as a passenger-carrying trawler capsized after colliding with a sand-laden trawler in Laiskar Beel area of the River Titas under Sadar upazila in Brahmanbaria.
