Covid infection rate jumps to 10.29%

Bangladesh on Sunday saw a steep rise in Covid-19 daily infection rate as the country recorded 10.29% infection in 24 hours.

On Saturday, Covid-19 infection rate was 9.39. Three days ago, on 18 March, the infection rate saw a big jump from 7.68 to 10.45.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) recorded 2,172 active Covid-19 cases in the country during the time. The number of novel coronavirus cases now stands at 570,878.

Besides, 22 people died from coronavirus in the last 24 hours. The death rate stands at 1.52%. The country's death toll from the virus now stands at 8,690, reads the press release.

Among the latest day's victims, 19 were men and three were women.

17 of them hailed from Dhaka, two each from Chattogram and Rajshahi , and one from Barishal division.

All victims died in different hospitals across the country.

Meanwhile, 21,108 samples were tested in 219 labs across the country in the past 24 hours. A total of 4,409,119 samples have been tested in the country so far.

Also, 1,687 patients were declared free of Covid-19 during the same period, raising the total number of recoveries to 522,405 with a 91.51% recovery rate.

The gender breakdown of Covid-19 victims shows that 6,570 of the total deceased were men and 2,120 were women.

Neighboring country India's Covid death toll reached to 159,755 on Sunday with six states accounting for 86.8 percent of the new Covid- related deaths reported, according to the Indian health ministry. As India reported 43,846 new coronavirus cases on Sunday, the biggest daily jump in four months which pushed the tally to 11,599,130 cases, 197 Covid- related deaths were reported in the past 24 hours, according to the Union ministry of health and family welfare.

The global death toll from the deadly virus reached to  2,723,350 as Covid continues to devastate countries across the world. The total global Covid caseload is 123,519,595, according to US-based Johns Hopkins University.
