Former home minister Sahara Khatun dies

Former home minister and Awami League presidium member Sahara Khatun has died at a Bangkok hospital.

The 77-year-old breathed her last at 11:25pm BdST on Thursday, her aide Mohammad Anis said.

Sahara Khatun was admitted to a hospital in Dhaka on June 2 with a fever, allergy and other preexisting conditions and later moved to the intensive care unit when her condition deteriorated, reports bdnews24.com.

Later on July 6, she was taken to Thailand's capital Bangkok by an air ambulance for better treatment.

Advocate Sahara Khatun, the founding president of Bangladesh Awami Ainjibi Parishad, was elected MP thrice from Dhaka-18 constituency.

She was made the home minister in 2009 and later served as the post and telecommunication minister.

UNB adds: Expressing deep shock at the death of the ruling party's senior leader, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, “Sahara Khatun, a soldier of Bangabandhu’s ideals, worked all her life for people’s rights and in establishing democracy.”
