In connection with the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif in Chattogram, a joint task force has detained 27 individuals. The arrests were made on Tuesday (November 26) during raids conducted from the afternoon until midnight in the Patharghata Mathar Patti, Anderkilla, and Hazari Goli areas of the city, according to Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Fazlul Kader. He confirmed to Kalbela that seven of those arrested were directly involved in Saiful's murder.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Crime) Md. Rois Uddin stated that the remaining 20 detainees are being scrutinized. While no case has been filed specifically for the murder, a case has been lodged at Kotwali Police Station regarding injuries sustained by police officers during the incident.
The lawyer’s death occurred during a clash between law enforcement and supporters of dismissed ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, following the denial of his bail. ISKCON supporters allegedly attacked, resulting in Saiful’s death.
On Wednesday morning, Saiful’s autopsy was completed at 8:30 AM. His first funeral prayer is scheduled at 10:00 AM at the court premises, followed by a second prayer at Jamiatul Falah National Mosque, and the final rites in his hometown of Lohagara after Asr prayers.
In response to the killing, the Chattogram District Bar Association has called for a court boycott on Wednesday. Consequently, the bail hearing for Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari has been postponed.
