Battery-run autorickshaw drivers clashed with police in the capital's Jurain railgate area on Friday. As a result, train communication on the Dhaka-Padma Bridge route has been suspended since 11:45am.
Police asked the autorickshaw drivers to remove the blockade, but a clash ensued instead. The two parties engaged in several rounds of chase and counter-chase. Autorickshaw drivers lobbed brickbats at police, while police lobbed tear shells and charged batons to disperse the drivers.
Confirming the matter, Kamalapur Railway Station Master Anowar Hossain said the battery-run autorickshaw drivers blocked the train tracks at Jurain, causing the Narayanganj Commuter Train to remain stranded. Meanwhile, the Khulna-bound Nokshikatha Commuter Train remains stuck at the Kamalapur Shahartali Station. No train would run on this route until the law-enforcing agencies give the green signal.
