The government has officially reversed a decision to prohibit the political activities of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir. 

The decision, formally published in a gazette notification on Wednesday, represents a significant change from the decision taken by the erstwhile Awami League government earlier this month, just days before its ouster.

Earlier, the erstwhile Awami League government had imposed a ban on Jamaat on August 1. On that day, a related notification was issued by the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The notification stated that the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its affiliated organization Islami Chhatra Shibir were responsible for the genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the Liberation War in 1971 as per the verdicts of several cases delivered by the International Crimes Tribunal. 

It added that the government believed that Jamaat and all its affiliated organizations, including Shibir, were involved in terrorist activities. 

It was under Section 18(1) of the Anti-Terrorism Act that the government banned Jamaat-e-Islami and all its affiliated organizations as political parties and organizations.
