SC issues status quo on HC order

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has issued issued of one month on the High Court's verdict to reinstate quota system in first and second-class government jobs.

  
The full bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan passed the order on Wednesdeay (July 10).

As a result of this order, the circular issued by the government in 2018 canceling the freedom fighter quota will remain in force, the lawyers said.

The chief justice urged the students to return to the classroom. He said that those who are protesting, the matter is not worth appreciating. However, the verdict cannot be changed by street movement. We are also human beings, we are talking in different directions, but we have to solve the issue.

Two students (July 9) on Tuesday filed a petition with the High Court seeking a stay on its decision to scrap the freedom fighter quota system in first and second-class government jobs.

The two students are Al Sadi Bhuiyan, president of Dhaka University Journalists' Association and Ahnaf Sayeed Khan, a student of Urdu department. Later, the chamber judge sent the petition to the Appellate Division for hearing. Chamber Justice of the Appellate Division Judge Md Ashfaqul Islam fixed the date for the hearing. Advocate Shah Monjurul Haque stood for the writ petitioner.

Earlier on July 4, the Appellate Division upheld a High Court verdict that scrapped freedom fighters' quota system first and second-class government jobs.
