The High Court has ordered the owner of Noor Engineering Workshop in Bhairab to pay a fixed deposit of Tk30 lakh to Naeem Hasan Nahid, a 13-year-old child who lost his arm three years ago while working in a workshop.
The High Court bench comprising Justice Naima Haider and Justice Kazi Zeenat Haque announced this verdict on Wednesday.
The court said that a deposit of Tk15 lakh should be made by April 2024 and a deposit of Tk15 lakh by December. After 10 years, Naeem Hasan Nahid will be able to withdraw the deposit amount.
At the same time, the court had asked to pay Tk7,000 per month until the child passes his HSC.
Earlier, a report was published in a national daily on November 1, 2020, on the terrible consequences of child labour in Bhairab.
According to the report, Naeem Hasan was 10 years old at the time, studying in the fourth grade, and living in Araisidha village of Ashuganj upazila in Brahmanbaria. His father, Anwar Hussain, was a shoemaker who became unemployed at the start of the coronavirus outbreak. To support the family, Naeem's parents had him work in a workshop in Bhairab, Kishoreganj. While working there, his right hand got caught in a machine, leading to the amputation of his right arm at the elbow.
In December 2020, Naeem's father filed a writ petition in the High Court seeking compensation, and the court ruled on the preliminary hearing on December 27 of that year. The court inquired why the child should not be awarded Tk2 crore in compensation, giving the defendants four weeks to respond.
Additionally, the deputy commissioner of Kishoreganj was instructed to investigate the incident of September 28, 2020. The High Court later announced the verdict after the hearing of the rule.
