The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is going to investigate the wealth of 94 public representatives of different Union Parishads countrywide who have been suspended for allegedly stealing relief goods intended for the people amid the Covid-19 crisis.

The public representatives include 30 UP chairmen and 64 members.

ACC spokesperson Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya confirmed it to The Business Standard on Saturday.

He said the ACC's allegation scrutiny committee led by ACC Director General AKM Sohel recommended setting-up probes against these public representatives and the commission approved it.

Allegations run rife that these public representatives were involved in embezzling government rice distributed under social safety net and relief goods, selling Tk10-a-kg rice in the black market instead of to the poor and making fake lists of beneficiaries for the prime minister's cash aid.

The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has suspended them.

The ACC has filed 21 cases against several of them while a few others have been arrested.

Iqbal Mahmood, chairman of the national anti-graft body, said the ACC will not let anybody enjoy the wealth they have amassed illegally.

"During this hard time, those who are embezzling rice, money and other government facilities intended for poor people are not human beings. They will not be spared," he warned.
