The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has decided to lodge a case against some senior officials of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) and others for misappropriating around Tk6 crore.

ACC Assistant Director Md Saiduzzaman would file a case on Monday, a top official of the commission confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

The accused are Dr Gyan Ranjan Sheel, former BIWTC chairman and director (technical); Captain Shawkat Sardar and Nurul Huda, BIWTC general managers (GM); Pankaj Kumar Paul, shipping ministry deputy secretary; Engineer Rahmat Ullah, former general manager (mechanical) of Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC); Engineer Nasir Uddin, manager (mechanical) of Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC); and M/s Johnny Corporation owner Omar Ali.

The accused helped each other to embezzle around Tk6 crore by showing fake purchase documents to buy fog lights for the Mawa and Aricha ferry terminals, according to the commission investigations report.

Recently, irregularities in purchasing fog lights surfaced in the media.

The BIWTC officials allegedly tested the efficacy of fog lights in the middle of a sunny day, which is usually done at night.

In response to a writ petition filed against the BIWTC, the High Court observed that this example proved the widespread corruption plaguing the corporation. The Supreme Court recently released the full verdict signed by Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury and Justice Kazi Zinat Hoque.
