The total number of hospitalized dengue patients has increased to 6,100 since January 2021 as 198 more patients were admitted to hospitals in 24 hours till 8:00 am on Sunday.

Of the patients hospitalized in the 24 hours, 189 were in Dhaka and nine in other divisions, according to the Health Emergency Operation Center and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services.

Among the total 6,100 dengue patients since January, 5,792 or 95 per cent of the patients have been hospitalized in the capital city of Dhaka.

The DGHS authorities have so far sent data of about 25 suspected dengue deaths to the Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research for confirmation but the institute is yet to give its feedback.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Sunday inaugurated a Dhaka North City Corporation road-show on creating awareness to prevent dengue.

DNCC mayor Atiqul Islam was present on the occasion.

Epidemiologist AM Zakir Hussain told New Age that the health departments of the two city corporations were not equipped with adequate manpower nor were they efficient.

‘We have to know about the condition of adult mosquitoes alongside larvae. We need an epidemiological survey in each week to determine which areas should be focused, 'he said.

He said the city authorities needed to check whether the larvicide they were spraying to kill Aedes mosquito larvae was effective.

On Sunday, 1,049 dengue patients, including 960 in the capital, were undergoing treatment at 41 government and private hospitals.

In the first 15 days in August, a total of 3,442 patients were hospitalized in Bangladesh.

Since January 2021, a total of 5,026 hospitalized patients have recovered from dengue, said a DGHS report.
