6 Rohingyas, 3 others killed in BD landslide, drowning

Nine people, including six Rohingyas of Myanmar, were killed in landslide and drowning triggered by heavy downpour in Rohingya camps and other areas in Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday.

Five of the deceased were identified as Dil Bahar, 25, Abdur Rahman, 3, Ayesa Begum, 1, Noor Bahar, 42, and Safiul Alam, 9.


One unknown Rohingya children also drowned in the flash flood during the rain.

Additional refugee relief and repatriation commissioner Md Samsuzzoha confirmed the deaths.

Rakim Ali, 60, of Monirghona village under Hoykong union was also killed when a wall of a house collapsed due to the heavy rain.

At Gundum, another youth was drowned in a flashflood.

The body of Ashish Barua, 16, who had gone missing in the flooding, was recovered after a few hours, said Gundum police outpost in-charge Delwar Hossain.

In another incident of landslide, Morsheda Begum, 17, daughter of Ansarul Karim, was killed at Chhota Moheshkhali, said Moheshkhali police officer-in-charge Abdul Hai.

Mohammad Jahangir, a volunteer working at the Balokhali Rohingya refugee camp, told reporters that two houses at the top of a hill were totally damaged by landslide Tuesday morning.

Local people, volunteers and members of the law enforcing agencies rushed to the spot and rescued many people from under the mud created by the landslide.

Five people of were killed on the spot, they said.

Two children were also injured in the incident and they were sent to a local hospital for treatment.

Many houses in eight Rohingya camps out of 34 in Ukhiya and Teknaf upazilas went under water due to the heavy rain since Tuesday morning, according to a United News of Bangladesh report.

The worst-hit camps were Kutupalong camp-5, Balokhali camp-1, Teknaf camp-26, Jamtoli camp, Hakimpara camp-24 and 27 and Maduchara camp, said the report.
