BD's coronavirus cases cross 100,000-mark

The number of confirmed Covid-19 patients has surpassed 100,000-mark in Bangladesh.

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Thursday reported 38 deaths from the coronavirus (Covid-19) in the 24 hours to 8:00 am today.

With the latest victims, the death toll due to the deadly virus infection reached at 1,343, Additional Director General of the DGHS Dr Nasima Sultana said.

According to the DGHS, a total of 3,803 people were tested positive afresh by the virus, during the same period, taking the number of such cases in the country to 102,232.

Among the diseased, 31 were men and seven women, while one was aged between 0-10, two were between 21-30, five were between 31-40, three between 41-50, six between 51-60, 14 between 61-70, five between 71-80, and two were between 81-90 years old.

Fourteen deaths were from Dhaka division, eighteen from Chattogram, two from Khulna, and one each from Rajshahi, Barisal, Mymensingh, Rangpur divisions.

Twenty-four people died in hospital and fourteen died in their homes, the DGHS senior official added.

Simultaneously, 1,975 people recovered from the respiratory disease, bringing the overall number of recovery to 40,164, Dr Nasima said.

A total of 16,259 samples were tested across the country during the period. With this, a total of 567,503 samples have so far been tested in the country.

On Wednesday, 43 people died and 4,008 people tested positive for the highly infectious disease.

Bangladesh registered the first case of such infection on March 08.

Covid-19, first reported in China, has so far infected 8,419,125 people globally and killed 451,704 of them, according to worldometer.info, a website that provides real-time updates.

Of the infected, 3,536,334 are currently being treated while 54,472 of them are in serious or critical condition, the website data shows.

As the virus began sweeping across the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus crisis a pandemic on March 11.
