The Bangladesh Truck-Covered Van Owners Workers Unity Council has called a nationwide goods transport strike for 48 hours on October 12-13 to press home its 9-point demand.
The demand include amendment to the Road Transport Act 2018.
Leaders of the Bangladesh Truck-Covered Van Owners Workers Unity Council called the strike from a divisional coordination meeting held at a community centre adjacent to the Shah Amanat Bridge in Chattogram on Saturday.
The Chattogram Regional Committee of the organisation arranged the meeting.
Speaking at the meeting, Osman Ali, general secretary of the central council of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation, said the government has implemented the Road Transport Act 2018 without considering the interests of transport onwers and workers. It has created an anarchy in the entire transport sector across the country.
"We have raised our nine-point demands to bring an end to the anarchy in the transport sector with the call to amend the Road Transport Act 2018 by December 31 next. As part of the realising the demands, we will observe a nationwide goods transport strike for 48 hours on October 12-13," he said.
Osman Ali also threatened to call an indefinite movement, if necessary, holding talks with the leaders and workers of all organisations in the transport sector.
