Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said that his party would not support the initiative of the Election Commission to amend some laws in the name of reforming Election Commission.

Addressing a press conference at office of party’s chairperson Khaleda Zia, Mirza Fakhrul said that the amendments would make the Election Commission and election system weaker.

‘The Election Commission led by KM Nurul Huda has failed to hold a single election in free and fair manners in last three years,’ said Mirza Fakhrul.

‘We cannot support the commission’s move to amend some laws which would curtail the commission’s power and authority to hold a free and fair election,’ he added.  

The Election Commission has taken initiatives to amend the Representation of People Order, formulate Registration Law 2020 for the political parties, and Local government election law.

BNP and other political parties will reject the proposals, Fakhrul added.

He also said that the Election Commission in last 10 years destroyed the election system of the country and in 2014 it held an election without participation of political parties, and in 2018 held another at midnight without voters.

After amending the RPO, the government will hold elections without the Election Commission, Fakhrul added.  

Replying to a question, Mirza Fakhrul said that BNP was taking part in the elections for continuation of a democratic system in the country.
