Bangladesh Bank (BB) has released new banknotes worth Tk 250 billion ahead of the Eid-ul-Azha.
New notes are printed several times every year but the demand for new notes becomes much higher ahead of two Eids--- Eid ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Azha.
The denominations of new currency notes include Tk 10, Tk 20, Tk 50, Tk 100, Tk 200 and Tk 500, BB officials said.
As a large volume of cash is required for trading of sacrificial animals, more notes of Tk 500 and Tk 1000 have been included in the latest release. The same number of old notes will be removed from the market as before.
The latest reprint of banknotes also includes a fresh note of Tk 1000 with additional colour-changing holographic and security features to strengthen the security of the banknote and prevent counterfeiting.
The size of the new note is 160×70mm, duly signed by BB Governor Fazle Kabir. The note is printed on highly durable paper containing synthetic fibre.
In addition to the new notes in circulation, the other Tk 1000 notes currently in circulation will be issued simultaneously as legal banknotes.
“The central bank has started issuing the new notes from Monday from its headquarters and the new notes will be available gradually from other branch offices of the central bank,” said Sayeda Khanam, General Manager, Department of Communications and Publications.
