Bangladesh today touched another grim milestone as the number of deaths from Covid-19 crossed the 2,000-mark, reaching 2,052, with 55 more deaths reported in last 24 hours.
The health directorate also confirmed 2,738 new cases of virus infection during the time. With this, the number of total infections stood at 162,417.
"Among the dead patients, 37 were men and 18 women. Of them, 19 were from Dhaka, 13 from Chattogram, eight from Rangpur, six from Khulna, five from Barishal, two from Sylhet, and one each from Rajshahi and Mymensingh division," Additional Director General of Health Directorate Professor Dr Nasima Sultana made the disclosure during a virtual briefing today.
Forty-one patients died in different hospitals and 14 at their respective homes.
According to the analysis of Covid-19 victims' age groups as of today, the highest number of patients - 890 or 48.73 percent - died till date were aged 60 and above. The age groups of 51-60 and 41-50 come next with respectively 28.90 percent (593) and 15.16 percent (311). Rest of the age groups stand under eight percent, such as- 31-40 with 7.36 percent (151), 21-30 with 3.51 percent (70), 11-20 with 1.20 percent (24) and under ten with 0.60 percent (13).
The gender-wise analysis of the victims stated that some 1,624 people who have died from Covid-19 are male and 428 are female, which are 89.14% and 20.86% respectively.
District-wise, out of 2,052 fatalities till date, 1,060 were hailed from Dhaka division, 634 from Chattogram, 102 from Rajshahi, 88 from Khulna, 86 from Sylhet, 72 from Barishal, 61 from Rangpur and 49 from Mymensingh division.
"Some 13,965 samples were collected in the last 24 hours and 13,988 were tested in 68 labs across the country. So far 846,062 samples have been tested," she added.
Besides, 1,904 patients have recovered during the time, increasing the tally to 72,625.
Around 44.72 percent of novel coronavirus patients – both symptomatic and asymptomatic – have recovered in Bangladesh so far, while 1.26 percent have died.
The latest day's infection rate was 19.57 percent of the total tests, though the overall rate in the country till date was 19.20 percent..
Currently, 64,502 people are quarantined across the country – including 2,887 newly-quarantined individuals. A total of 312,530 people have completed their quarantine course.
The country is capable of accommodating 31,991 people at 629 institutional quarantine facilities across the country.
Nasima Sultana said, "The authorities placed 449 new individuals suspected of having Covid-19 into isolation, bringing the total to 16,715 after 14,157 left."
As many as 14,,767,276 hotline health services were given by 16,414 trained and 4,217 volunteer doctors via three designated numbers, including 160,588 in the last 24-hour till 8am today.
Till date, a total of 742,329 thermal screenings were conducted at different ports, including 588 at three international airports, 148 at seaports and 88 at land ports in the last 24 hours.
As per the data provided by Central Medical Stores Depot (CMSD), personal protective equipment (PPE) collected by the government has been 2,528,245 till date, of which 2,420,164 were distributed and 108,081 are left in store.
Dr Nasima further added that the number of general beds dedicated to Covid-19 treatment in Dhaka city and countrywide are respectively 6,075 and 14,775, while the ICU beds count for 149 in Dhaka metropolitan and 401 in the whole country. There are 11,785 oxygen cylinders, 207 high-flow nasal cannula and 98 oxygen concentrator available across the country.
However, only 7,113 general beds and 355 ICU beds are currently occupied by the patients receiving Covid-19 treatment countrywide.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) confirmed the first Covid-19 death in the country on March 18. Coronavirus death toll crossed 1,000-mark on June 10 after 94 days of the outbreak began here. However, it reported next 1,000 deaths in last 25 days.
Globally, the virus has killed around 5.33 lakh people and infected 1.14 crore more so far. It killed highest 129,676 people in USA alone till date, followed by Brazil (64,265 deaths) and United Kingdom (44,283 deaths).
