The price of green chilli nearly doubled on the city’s kitchen markets over the week ending on Friday due to a supply shortage.

The prices of vegetables also remained high on the market over the week.

Traders said that the price of green chilli witnessed a sharp rise over the week as the flash floods and monsoon caused much damage to farmlands across the country, leading to a supply shortage of the item on the city markets.

The price of green chilli rose by Tk 50-60 a kilogram and the item was selling for Tk 110-120 a kg on Friday.

Aubergine was selling for Tk 60-70 a kg, papaya for Tk 50 a kg, bitter gourd for Tk 80-90 a kg, okra for Tk 40 a kg, bottle gourd for Tk 60 apiece, cucumber for Tk 40-60 a kg and tomato for Tk 40-60 a kg on Friday.

The price of the course variety rice saw a slight fall on the market over the week and the item was selling for Tk 40-45 a kg on Friday.

The standard variety of BR-28 rice was selling for Tk 48-50 a kg and the fine variety for Tk 50-54 a kg in the capital on Friday.

The fine variety of Miniket rice was selling for Tk 56-65 a kg on the day with the fine variety of Najirshail rice retailing at Tk 60-65 a kg.

The price of red lentil remained high on the kitchen markets. The medium-quality variety was selling for Tk 95-110 a kg while the coarse variety was selling for Tk 75-80 a kg.

The fine variety of red lentil was selling for Tk 120-125 a kg on the markets on Friday.

The price of onion remained unchanged. The local variety was selling for Tk 45-50 a kg while the imported variety was selling for Tk 20-30 a kg.

The price of potato remained high over the week and the item was selling for Tk 30 a kg on the day.

The price of broiler chicken also remained unchanged and the item was selling for Tk 150-160 a kg on the markets in the capital on Friday.

Locally bred hens were selling for Tk 450-500 a kg.

The price of beef was high with the item selling for Tk 560-580 a kg while mutton was selling for Tk 750-800 a kg on Friday on the markets in the capital.

The price of eggs remained high as well with each hali or four pieces selling for Tk 3236 on Friday.

Unpackaged soyabean oil was selling for Tk 94-97 a litre and palm oil was selling for Tk 86 a litre.

Bottled soyabean oil (a one-litre container) was selling for Tk 110 while a five-litre container was selling for Tk 490-530 on the markets.

Fine-quality packaged salt was selling for Tk 35 a kg while the refined variety was retailing at Tk 25 a kg.

The price of garlic fell by Tk 10-20 a kg over the week. Imported garlic was selling for Tk 90-110 a kg while the local variety was retailing at Tk 100-110 a kg on the markets on Friday.

The price of ginger remained unchanged. Imported ginger was selling for Tk 150-160 a kg and the local variety was retailing at Tk 120-150 a kg on the day.

The prices of fish also remained high over the week.

Rohita was selling for Tk 280-350 a kg and Katla for Tk 250-350 a kg, depending on their sizes and quality.

Pangas was selling for Tk 130-180 a kg and Tilapia for Tk 120-160 a kg.

Refined sugar was selling for Tk 60-65 a kg while the locally produced variety was retailing at Tk 70 a kg.
