The government will import 50,000 tonnes of sugar and 20,000 tonnes of onion from neighboring India ahead of the upcoming month of Ramadan.

State Minister for Commerce Ahasanul Islam Titu said this while talking to reporters at his ministry office in Dhaka on Wednesday.

“I talked to the Indian commerce minister and secured consent regarding the import of 50,000 tonnes of sugar and 20,000 tonnes of onion for the upcoming month of Ramadan,” he said.

Meanwhile, the price of Murikata, or early harvested onions, surged by Tk 20 per kg, reaching Tk 105 at the retail level in different markets across the capital Dhaka on Wednesday.

According to the commitment, the sugar and onion will arrive in Bangladesh from India before the beginning of the month of Ramadan, said the junior minister.
