The High Court on Monday sentenced seven extremists to imprisonment until death, for killing 22 people, mostly foreign nationals, in the attack at Holey Artisan Bakery on July 1, 2016.

The convicts are — Jahangir Hossain alias Rajib Gandhi alias Abu Omar, Aslam Hossain Rash, Hadisur Rahman alias Sagor, Rakibul Hasan Rigan alias Rafiul Islam, Md Abdus Sabur Khan alias Shohel Mahfuz, Shariful Islam Khaled, and Mamunur Rashid Ripon.

A bench of Justice Shahidul Karim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman pronounced the verdict after hearing death references and appeals of the seven extremists, who were sentenced to death by the trial court on November 27, 2009.

The High Court on October 11 concluded the hearings.

The attack on the Holey Artisan cafe in Dhaka was carried out by a group of five men who took visitors to the restaurant hostage.

The 12-hour siege was one of the deadliest extremist attacks in Bangladesh, where most of the victims were Italians and Japanese.

Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal in Dhaka sentenced the seven members of the banned Jamaat-ul-Mujahideein Bangladesh to death for their involvement in the attack on the restaurant.

The court acquitted one accused, as his involvement in the attack could not be proven.
