Flood situation to worsen in next 1-2 days

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) on Sunday said that rivers in the Ganges-Padma and the Brahmaputra basins and those in the northeastern region were in a rising trend and would continue to in the next 24-48 hours.

However, the Jamuna and the Kushiyara rivers were in a steady state on Sunday.

The Teesta River may flow close to its danger level at Dalia Point of Nilphamari in the next 24 hours, the FFWC bulletin said.

According to the forecast of meteorological agencies, there was a chance of heavy rainfall at some places in the northern and northeastern regions of the country along with adjoining upstream areas of India in the next 48 hours.

As a result, the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers in the northern region and the major rivers in the northeastern region of the country (Surma, Kushiyara, Jadukata, Sarigowain, Someshwari and Bhugai-Kangsha) may rise rapidly at some points in the next 48 hours.

Meanwhile, one more person died due to floods across the country in the 24 hours to Sunday morning.


With the latest development, the number of reported fatalities now stands at 135, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Around 27,268 people were hit by floods during the same period.

Forty-four upazilas were affected by floods, including 33 in Sylhet, three in Rangpur, seven in Mymensingh and one in Chittagong divisions.

Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona and Moulvibazar were the worst-hit districts, with 13, 11, seven and five upazilas affected by floods, respectively.
