The Directorate General of Health Services on Tuesday reported this year’s first death from mosquito-borne dengue fever while 27 more dengue patients were hospitalised in Dhaka city in the past 24 hours till 8:00am on the day.

The year’s first fatal dengue victim died at Central Hospital at Dhanmondi in the capital, said a DGHS press release.

No hospitalisation due to the mosquito-borne viral fever was reported from outside Dhaka on the day as the official tally of hospitalised dengue cases across the country rose to 808 since January 1.

The DGHS release said that 110 dengue patients were still under treatment at different health facilities on the day, with 106 of them being in Dhaka and four others outside Dhaka.

The DGHS data also showed that 456 dengue patients were hospitalised in the 21 days of June, 163 in May, 23 in April, 20 in February and March each and 126 in January. And at least 697 or 86.26 per cent of them were hospitalised in Dhaka city.

The health directorate in a pre-monsoon survey found a higher density of Aedes mosquitos in Dhaka in April this year compared to the mosquito density in 2021 and predicted a worsening dengue situation unless preventive steps were taken soon.
