The Chittagong University unit Bangladesh Chhatra League on Wednesday lifted the blockade it imposed on the university after the police arrested one of the accused that attacked BCL leader Pradip Chakraborty Durjoy and Md Rashed.

CU BCL general secretary Iqbal Hossain Tipu told New Age that some local Juba League activists led by Md Hanif carried out the attack.

‘The BCL activists and general students were protesting at the incident,’ he said, adding that the blockade was imposed in protest against the attack.

The university’s main gate was locked and a demonstration staged following the attack on the BCL leaders by the local Juba League activists.

No classes and examinations were held on the CU campus due to the BCL blockade, said officials and students.

‘There were no classes and exams held as teachers’ bus, shuttle trains were halted,’ said CU acting registrar SM Manirul Hasan.

A CU assistant proctor told New Age that Hanif always took part in the tender process whenever the university authorities called for a tender to sell trees.

According to the BCL leader Pradip, Hanif and his men suddenly carried out an attack on him in the rail gate area.

‘Hanif earlier cut the university trees without taking any permission. We protested his illegal act. He came down on me as I stood against him including his drug dealing inside the university campus,’ said the leader.

CU proctor Rabiul Hasan Bhuiyan argued that they solved the problems after discussing the issue with the BCL leaders.

However, the BCL activists often engage in clashes with the local people over establishing supremacy on the campus and its adjacent areas.

Five BCL activists of Chittagong University unit were injured after they engaged in clashes with local people following an altercation over parking a motorcycle on the road near the CU Gate 2 on May 22.
