Bangladesh celebrating 50th anniversary of victory

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid glowing tributes to the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War by placing wreaths at the National Memorial in Savar on the outskirts of the capital early on Thursday to mark the 51st Victory Day.

The president placed the wreath at the altar of the National Memorial at about 6:30am followed by the prime minister doing the same, 

Sheikh Rehana, the younger daughter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the prime minister’s younger sister, was also present there.

After placing the wreaths, the president and the prime minister stood in solemn silence for a while as a mark of deep respect to the memories of the martyrs of the Liberation War in 1971.

A smartly turned-out contingent drawn from the Armed Forces presented the state salute on the occasion, as the bugles played the last post.

Flanked by senior leaders of the Awami League, Sheikh Hasina, also president of the ruling party, laid another wreath at the National Memorial as the party chief.

Later, Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain and leaders of different political as well as socio-cultural organizations placed wreaths at the memorial.

The nation is celebrating the 51st Victory Day on Thursday, the most precious day of the Bangali people, as the country was liberated from the Pakistani forces on the day in 1971 after a nine-month struggle.
