Unidentified assailants beat him to death a day after the election

A newly elected Union Parishad (UP) member in Gaibandha Sadar’s Laxmipur union has been beaten to death by unidentified assailants late on Friday.

Forty-five-year-old Md Abdur Rouf, who was elected in the polls held on Thursday, was attacked while returning home, said police.

”Unidentified assailants stopped him on the road and hit him on the head with iron rods,” said Gaibandha Sadar Police OC Masudur Rahman.

They fled when locals gathered to the scene hearing Rouf’s screams, he said.

According to the OC, locals rushed Rouf to the Gaibandha General Hospital where he died while undergoing treatment.

He said that the attack is likely over the results of the union council voting held on November 11.
