The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched an investigation into more than 50 leaders of Hefazat-e-Islam, including Junaid Babungari and Mamunul Haque, on charges of embezzlement and corruption.
The Hefazat leaders have allegedly embezzled a huge sum of money from the organization's funds, various madrassas, orphanages, Islamic institutions and foreign aid for religious purposes.
The decision to investigate was taken by the ACC after detectives of Bangladesh Bank and the commission found truth to the allegations.
ACC sources said an eight-member team, led by Akhtar Hossain Azad, has been formed to investigate the charges.
