At least two people were killed in a fire that broke out in an oil tanker on the Karnaphuli River at Chittagong port on Thursday.

Meanwhile, two others were sent to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) in critical condition.

The fire broke out at the engine room of inland oil tanker oil tanker “MT Iravati 1” at the Super Petro Chemical Jetty of the port at around 6am.

Newton Das, deputy assistant director of Chittagong Fire Service and Civil Defence told UNB that an electrical short-circuit at the engine room of the vessel might have triggered the devastating fire.

Firefighting unit from Korean EPZ, three vehicles from Agrabad fire service and civil defence, two tug boats of CPA -- Kandari 1 and Kandari-10 -- and Bangladesh Navy's tug boat Passur responded to the scene and doused the fire around 9am, according to media reports.

Meanwhile, two crew members died on the spot, while two others were rushed to the CMCH.

The deceased were identified as Nizam Uddin, 50, of Feni’s Chhagalnaiya and Ruhul Amin, 45, of Noakhali’s Kabirhat.

And the injured were identified as Md Shahabuddin, 60, and Sufian, 40.

“Both the injured are in critical condition with 95% burns on their bodies. They are undergoing treatment at the burn unit of the hospital,” Rafiq Uddin, head of the CMCH burn unit, told Bangla Tribune.
