Repair work on the submarine cable SEA-ME-WE 5 will be undertaken on early Saturday, from 2:00am until 6:00am

Internet users in Bangladesh may experience slow speed on Saturday, due to routine maintenance work of a submarine cable.

The Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company said in a statement that repair work on the submarine cable SEA-ME-WE 5 will be undertaken on early Saturday, from 2:00am until 6:00am, which will put pressure on the other submarine cable and cause slow internet speed.

Almost half the bandwidth supply in the country comes through the SEA-ME-WE-5, according to the Internet Service Provider Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB).

All of SEA-ME-WE-5's circuits located in Kuakata will remain closed for the duration as a result.

However, the circuit of the country's first submarine cable SEA-ME-WE 4 and International Terrestrial Cable (ITC) operators will remain open.

Internet speed will slow down by 40-50 per cent. As the majority of the people do not use internet extensive from 2:00-6:00am, the effect should be minimal. However, maintenance work may begin as early as late Friday from midnight, said Emdadul Hoque, general secretary of ISPAB.
