Youth allegedly set on fire by co-workers, dies

A 20-year-old youth, allegedly set on fire by his co-workers has died at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

Riyad Hossain passed away while undergoing treatment at 12:45am on Saturday.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police outpost in-charge Inspector Bachchu Miah confirmed the matter.

On November 24, Riyad was admitted to the hospital with 40% burn injuries, after he was set on fire, allegedly by three of his co-workers at Shyampur Salahuddin Filling Station.

Riyad was a honours student at the Siddeshwari University College, besides studies, he used to work at the petrol pump, his father Farid Hossain said.

The three accused Mahmud Hasan Emon, 22, Md Farhad Ahmed Pavel, 28 and Shahidul Islam Rony, were sent to prison after their arrest, investigation officer Sub-Inspector (SI) Mahbub of Shyampur police station said.

Riyad was forced by Pavel and Rony to pour petrol on Emon while he was sleeping. After Emon woke up covered in petrol, he became angry and set Riyad on fire after learning about the matter, the SI said.

Later, the three took Riyad to the hospital in a critical condition.
