A large number of farmers here are now growing chemical free vegetables using compost instead of different chemical fertilizers and poisonous pesticides.

Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has taken necessary steps to inspire the farmers to use organic fertilizers and apply less quantities of chemical manure aimed at producing poison free vegetables.

The department has educated the peasants on the bad effect of using pesticide and chemical fertilizer in vegetable fields and also given them training on pest management.

Deputy Director, DAE Shovan Kumar Dhar told BSS that because of the training and motivation, a good number of farmers including women in the district are now quite aware of the harmful effects of using chemical fertilizers in their vegetable fields.

He said Narsingdi district is a leading vegetable producing area in the country and usually supplies 30 to 40 percent of its production to the capital and other districts.
